Bag-in-Box® (BIB) is an innovative packaging solution designed to extend the shelf life of liquid or semi-liquid food products. The outer box provides exceptional protection during transit and uses high-quality materials to attract consumer attention in-store. Each bag is specifically constructed to preserve the exact liquid inside. It is a cost-effective solution which is fully compliant with new environmental regulations, while meeting the specific needs of its customers.
Smurfit Kappa Bag-in-Box® plants are ultra-clean and unique. They are equipped with modern, efficient and automated machinery, ensuring complete control of the assembly of bags, spouts and taps. Production areas are filtered, air-conditioned and treated against microbes. Temperature and humidity levels are under permanent observation. Staff adhere to strict procedures to deliver high-quality products that fully satisfy the hygiene criteria of the food industry. Products are fully compliant with food packaging regulations. Efficient traceability at all levels of production, from the raw materials through to the finished product, guarantees the highest quality of Bag-in-Box® is achieved and maintained.

- The dimensions, shape and quality of the box are essential characteristics of the Bag-in-Box® system, as the box is what protects the wine from the light and the bag from external impacts.
The large surface area allows for great communication possibilities:
- Printing: silkscreen, offset, flexo, HD flexo, digital.
- Special features: UV coating, spot UV, thermal color printing, embossing, stamping, textured papers (woven, grainy).
The papers used to create the boxes are generally made of kraft paper on the interior (to protect the bag) and of kraft paper as a cover, where possible. The ideal volume guarantees a perfect fit of the box to the volume of the bag, avoiding the risk of buckling or flex cracking.
Optimized packaging and logistics
Bag-in-Box® has a low initial weight and some improved materials and components, allowing substantial reduction in the consumption of raw materials as well as streamlining transport and reducing CO2 emissions. The transport of empty Bag-in-Box®, delivered flat, requires 6x less trucks than the transport of bottle cases. The storage is also optimized.
The Bag-in-Box® is made up of 75% cardboard and 25% plastic. It is simple to recycle as the bag and the box are easy to separate. We are currently working on improving the bag’s recyclability, as it can be incinerated to produce energy. We put an emphasis on research and development to ensure continuous improvement of Bag-in-Box® products.
